Epilepsy Management

Comprehensive Evaluation for Seizures and Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures caused by abnormal electrical activity within the brain. Seizures can vary from brief episodes of staring or altered awareness to uncontrolled movements and loss of consciousness.

Many patients with epilepsy can be successfully managed with medications. However, when seizures remain uncontrolled despite appropriate treatment, specialist evaluation may be needed to determine whether an underlying structural brain condition or surgically treatable cause is present.

Dr. Shubham Vasudeva provides neurosurgical assessment for selected patients with epilepsy, particularly where imaging reveals a structural abnormality requiring further evaluation.

Common Seizure Symptoms

Seizures may present with:

  • Sudden loss of awareness
  • Uncontrolled jerking movements
  • Temporary confusion
  • Staring episodes
  • Unusual sensations
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Repetitive movements
  • Temporary speech or memory disturbances

The type of symptoms depends on which region of the brain is affected.

Diagnostic Evaluation

Epilepsy assessment can involve neurological examination and investigations such as:

  • MRI of the brain
  • Electroencephalography (EEG)
  • Detailed seizure history
  • Review of medications
  • Additional functional or neurological investigations when required

These tests help determine the seizure type and identify possible structural causes such as brain tumors, vascular abnormalities, previous trauma, or developmental lesions.

When Neurosurgery May Be Considered

Most epilepsy treatment is managed medically by neurologists. Neurosurgical intervention is considered only in selected cases where seizures remain difficult to control and a clearly defined abnormal area can potentially be treated surgically.

Treatment decisions typically involve collaboration between neurologists, neurosurgeons, radiologists, and other specialists.

Patient-Focused Epilepsy Care

Dr. Shubham’s approach focuses on careful patient selection, detailed imaging assessment, realistic counselling, and multidisciplinary planning.

The objective is to understand the underlying cause of seizures, determine whether neurosurgical treatment has an appropriate role, and help patients access a treatment pathway focused on seizure control, neurological safety, and improved quality of life.
